Last week, my daughter and I got some free tickets to go see the UFC BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) matches live at the UFC Apex Center. Both my kids have been doing jiu-jitsu for several years, and it was a treat for Alina to get to see some world-class athletes compete! The matches didn’t all end as we would have preferred, but it was still an amazing event.

There never seems to be a shortage of things to do (off the Strip) here in Vegas. What sporting event or concert have you been to recently that you enjoyed?

🚧 Spring Mountain Road set for major repaving

The Gist: Clark County approved a $5.7 million contract to repave Spring Mountain Road from Rainbow to Decatur through the Chinatown corridor. Construction is expected to begin in about 45 days and take roughly six months, with lane closures along the route.
Why It Matters: Anyone who drives through Chinatown knows the road has seen better days. The project will mean some orange cones and slower trips for a while, but the county also plans wider sidewalks and smart traffic technology as part of the work.
🏗️ New apartments proposed in Summerlin
The Gist: A proposed mixed-use project could add 354 apartments and 6,556 square feet of retail space near Downtown Summerlin. Clark County commissioners are scheduled to consider the plan Sept. 2 for a nearly four-acre site along Spruce Goose Street.
Why It Matters: If approved, the five-story project would bring more housing to an area already packed with shops, restaurants and things to do. Plans include studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments, along with a pool, clubhouse and dog spa.

🍜 Bold Yunnan flavors in Chinatown

5115 Spring Mountain Rd Ste 103-105, Las Vegas
Crab Childe Yunnan Tasty Garden specializes in Yunnan-style Chinese dishes, with rice noodles, spicy soups, hot pot and plenty of options for sharing. Crossing-the-bridge rice noodles are one of the signatures, along with cucumber salad and customizable hot pot with meats, vegetables and plenty of mala spice.
Portions are generous, and some dishes bring serious heat, so it’s worth checking the spice level before ordering. If you’re in the mood to venture beyond the usual Chinese takeout menu, there’s a lot here to explore.
